Assaidi to bolster attacking options

By Scott Hendry

The transfer deadline has passed for Premier League clubs and it’s now time for Liverpool to not look at the players they could have acquired but they players they’ve already got. Just one of the current batch who will be looking to make a big impact at Anfield in the coming season is new-boy Oussama Assaidi .

Described as an “exciting young potential star” by Liverpool owner John Henry, Assaidi was one of five players to arrive on Merseyside this summer along with Joe Allen, Fabio Borini, Nuri Sahin and Samed Yesil.

In his three years at Dutch side Heerenveen the Moroccan-international played 79 league games scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists.

In 2011/12, Assaidi managed to notch 10 goals in 27 matches and double figures again this season would certainly put to ease some of Liverpool’s goalscoring woes.

At the age of 24 it’s an opportunity for the Eridivisie star to stamp his authority in one of Europe’s top leagues and establish himself on the bigger stage that is the English Premier League.

Given the number 11 shirt as worn by Maxi Rodriguez last term, Assaidi is a right-footed winger who would ideally play on the left-side of Liverpool’s top three but has the capability to figure on the right or down the middle.

The £3 million buy will face competition for his place in the side most noticeably by 17-year-old starlet Raheem Sterling who has been one of the Reds best and most consistent performers in these early stages of the season.

This transfer window has seen Liverpool criticised for failing to significantly strengthen their attacking options. However, this will no doubt provide Assaidi with a point to prove and a hunger to progress under Brendan Rodgers.

With our recent arrival not featuring against Arsenal on Sunday it is difficult to say how he will adjust to the English game. Assaidi is likely to feature against Sunderland in Liverpool’s next league game and hopefully we as Liverpool supporters will see that we have a fantastic prospect on our hands.
